Why I Love Master Gardeners:
Volunteerism is good for the soul, the people are great and like-minded, helping people in the community and its a great way to communicate with people in the community and find out what problems, diseases and insects are in the area.
What I Like to Do:
Fish, Hunt, shoot cook and take pictures of the aforementioned. I love gardening for pollinators to feed my bees and vegetable gardening except for July and August. The best thing about July and August is winter crops are ready to plant. I also have mushroom logs and love the Fig tree Doug Pardy gave me. Never thought I would like figs or want they tasted like except for Fig Newtons my grandfather used to give me when I was a kid. Figs are much better tasting.
Melanie Brandon
Born and raised in Tennessee, I moved up to Murray after high school to work on my bachelor’s in Animal Health Technology. I ended up marrying a Marshall county native, so I stayed in the area. I will graduate May of 2021 with my Master’s in Agriculture Science with a emphasis in wildlife biology. I grew up on a hobby farm that doubled as a educational farm for locals, grade schools, and universities. This is where I found my love vermiculture! I could talk for hours on how to set up systems and the befits of worms. I love to work with all types of plants (except maybe monkey grass). My favorite plants though are cactus/succulents and orchids!
Kelly Canfield
Transplanted to Kentucky from Wisconsin in 2004 so I could be in the garden longer. I love Marshall County and helping people with their landscapes. My favorite plants are easy-to-grow perennials, since I still work full time. Weird and unusual plants are my special favorites.
Johnnie Davis
A native of Marshall County, I grew up on a working farm. I enjoy being part of the gardening community through Master Gardeners because it keeps me physically active, keeps me mentally alert by learning new things, and gardening fulfills my spiritual need to be close to the earth. My passions are photography, herbs, and healthy eating. I have been married for 50 years to a man who loves to cook and is supportive of my gardening efforts.
Pat Drysdale
Small town girl from southern Illinois. Moved to Ky. My grandmother got me interested in flowers when I was a kid. It has grown from there. I enjoy learning about all types of gardening now.
Pat Green
Pat Green has been with Marshall County Master Gardeners since 2019. She has loved animals and nature since childhood. She has a love for the outdoors; hiking, camping, canoeing and or course gardening. After a career in business and computers, she is now rejoining the outdoors and enjoys volunteering and working in her blueberry orchard.

Love being outside all day
With flowers and shrubs I play
I dig in the dirt
Get some on my shirt
Now, what more can I say

For as long as I can remember, I have loved to be outside and gardening. I learned from my grandfather, father, neighbor, and friends.I can't wait until Spring for my flowers to bloom. When a specific flower is ready to bloom, I make sure the garden is weeded and looking it's best. The flowers then have their moment to shine. I'm originally from St. Louis. I have lived in Western Ky since January, 1992. Married with three grown children living in Texas, Nebraska, and Lone Oak, Ky with four grandchildren. I worked in offices for 41 years; I have been a girl scout leader, eight years as girl's softball coach, and a volunteer activity director for a senior citizens group. From my younger years until now, everyone who has known me, knows how much I love gardening.
I've even been called the Flower Lady.

My sweet Rick and I married (at Grandmother's in C City) in 1998. Moved from the Olive farm (horses, chickens, guineas, lots of gardens) to a fixer-upper on the lake in 2017: Still working on it! Loving lake life, learning about native plants, building new gardens, and new friendships! Community activites involve Marshall County Children's Art Center, Alpha Delta Kappa (educator service organization), Master Gardeners, and Hardin Baptist Church. Biggest Ag adventure was 2015 mission trip to build a chicken house garden system (my research and design) for an orphanage in Kenya.

Michele Spiceland
Hello, I am a born and raised gardener from western KY. I love being outside. It renews my spirt and my faith in God. I learned my love of vegetable gardening from my Pappy Ross, my love of flowers from my Grandmother Metzger and my love of native wild flowers from being in the woods with my husband, Mickey, while hunting. But, I especially love perennials! Let's go play in the soil!
Tami Widelski
I grew up in a rural suburban Northwest Indiana area. I preferred city life and all the conveniences that came with it. After marrying my high school sweetheart, I chose to adapt to his interests; hunting, fishing, appreciating the love for nature. For several years, Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley became our vacation spots, which lead our family to move to Graves County, KY in November of 1998. Fast forward 20+ years, finding our dream Lake House in Marshall County, I was also blessed to get hired by the MC Extension Service. Because I was exposed to ALL the research-based education components the office has to offer, I realized it was the “best kept secret” and felt drawn to learn more about horticulture and take the Master Gardner Course. I value the knowledge of my fellow Master Gardeners who have become like my family. I have learned so much in a short amount of time. I can honestly say that I have found the passion to continue to experience all that nature has to offer.

I was born and raised in Marshall County. I grew up next door to an avid gardener. I guess that’s where the love of fresh produce started. I’ve been a Master Gardener since 2018.

2023 has been my first official year as a Master Gardener. I have always enjoyed plants – landscape and perennial flower beds. Since retirement in 2021 I have been able to do some vegetable gardening as well. I am trying to expand my current beds with additions of species beneficial for pollinators, butterflies, and hummingbirds. I truly enjoy the comradery of the Master Gardener group and the volunteer opportunities it offers.
Janice Bastian
I've been a coastal dweller most of my life. I love learning about native life every where I've lived. I believe plants have the ability to heal, our bodies as well as the soil.i am an organic, regenerative farmer. My gardens may not be well groomed but they encourage life. If I branch out I would love to learn more about entomology.
Laressa Bazzell
I am a true local woman, born and raised in Marshall County. I’ve played with gardening for as long as I can remember. Some of the early days were forced, beyond my control, haha! I work full-time as a Nurse Anesthesiologist traveling. If I could grow everything, I would! Currently, my favorites are houseplants. If it looks unusual, I like it!
Bill Dibert
I’m a retired Metallurgical Engineer relocated to Kentucky from Wheeling, West Virginia. Raised in Dayton, Ohio; weekends and summer vacations were spent on my grandparent’s tobacco/cattle farm located near the Shawnee State Forest in Ohio. Fond memories of working in the fields and gardens there and exploring the wooded hillsides that surrounded them remain a source of motivation to learn and practice for me. I am a hobbyist beekeeper and enjoy transforming the landscape around my home to be more pollinator friendly and ultimately, less lawnmower intensive!

As a kid I gardened with my father, who was an avid gardener. My love of gardening has grown, to provide fresh vegetables for my family and friends. Sharing a love for gardening with my children and others is a passion of mine.

I moved to Kentucky permanently in 2020 after having a cottage here since 2013. I am originally from Wisconsin. I love to grow flowers and some veggies. I help with Jr Master Gardener group. It is so interesting to garden here because of the differences in weather.

I have always loved plants, animals, and art from the beginning. I have had little formal education in plants but Adult Education classes in Commercial Horticulture. I have worked & volunteered at greenhouses, nurseries, state parks, conservatories gardens, wholesale & retail plant places in the states where I have lived. I am now enjoying being retired and being active in the community. I live on almost an acre of property close to Aurora where I enjoy taking care of my plants & animals, a dog, a cat, and three quail.
